SOME OF OUR FAVO(U)RITES

We wanted to make recommendations, but it turns out there’s a lot of stuff in a city and we figured that showing everything would be overwhelming to first-time visitors. After much agonizing, we decided to limit ourselves to three items per person for each category. But then Lauren totally cheated and tried to sneak in more where she thought you wouldn’t notice.

Anyway, let Seán know if you want to see the full list.

Avoiding starvation

1. Coasters Coffee: Get the hojicha oat latte.
2. Wicked Cafe: Get the Basque cheesecake.
3. Whisk Matcha Cafe: Get the literally anything.
Seán
1. Revolver: For the pure coffee snob experience.
2. Caffè Cittadella: A converted heritage home built in 1894.
3. Grounds for Coffee: The best cinnamon buns in the region.
Restaurants

1. Raglan’s Bistro: For when you come all the way to Canada and want Californian food.
2. Hokkaido Ramen Santouka: Don’t listen to Seán. This ramen is the way to go.
3. Ignite Pizzeria: It’s hard to go wrong with a good pizza.
Seán
1. Seasons in the Park: Our default fine dining experience.
2. Kokoro Tokyo Mazesoba: Soupless ramen! It’s bloody lovely.
3. Fable Diner: Get the meatloaf and thank me later.
Pubs & Bars

1. The Cider House: Ciders in abundance.
2. Main Street Brewing Co.: A funky space with a good drink selection.
3. Moose’s Down Under Bar and Grill/Black Frog Eatery: It’s a tie. Follow your heart.
Seán
1. Yellow Dog Brewing Co.: Possibly the best microbrewery in Vancouver.
2. East Van Brewing Company: Combine the drinks with Downlow Chicken!
3. Johnnie Fox’s: A taste of home for those coming from Ireland.

1. Secret Garden Tea Company: Tricky to get to on transit, but worth it.
2. Flourist: Not quite a cafe, not quite a restaurant. Surprisingly healthy.
3. Catfe/Catoro: Vancouver’s two cat cafes. Similar, yet different.

1. Harmony Donut Shop: The best ones in the area.
2. Rocky Point Ice Cream: Come see Port Moody!
3. La Belle Patate: You’re in Canada, you have to get poutine.
Pumpkin Spice Latte

Lauren
Pumpkin spice season is the best season, and Vancouver is a good place for it. My favorite pumpkin spice latte in the city can be found at Caffe Artigiano.
There are several locations; however, Google Maps recommends not going to the Robson one, near the stadium, as it’s quite small.

1. VanDusen Botanical Garden: Who doesn’t like a gorgeous botanical garden?
2. Museum of Anthropology: Featuring a truly excessive amount of local history.
3. Vancouver Public Library Central Branch: Follow it up with a visit to Mink.

1. Vancouver Aquarium: We’re both proud members!
2. Academie Duello: Why not try out some medieval weapons while you’re here?
3. Bill Reid Gallery: Phenomenal indigenous artwork.
Parks & Hikes

1. Lynn Creek: Home of Lynn Valley Suspension Bridge.
2. Pacific Spirit Park: A great place to run off into the woods, never to be seen again.
3. Quarry Rock: Unfortunately you’ll want a car for this, but it’s fantastic if you can get there.
Seán
1. Grouse Grind: Not really a hike, but a great workout.
2. Stanley Park: An obvious one. Also great for cycling.
3. Pacific Spirit Park: Lots of trails and right next to UBC.
Nice Walks
Lauren
1. False Creek (south side): Great views of the city. Finish with a visit to Honolulu Coffee.
2. New West Waterfront: Like Venice, but in Canada.
3. North Fairview: A few blocks of nice apartments, just south of False Creek.
Seán
1. Deer Lake Trails: Right by both the wedding venue and Burnaby Art Gallery.
2. Byrne Creek Loop: Right outside our home!
3. Shoreline Trail: Grab yourself an ice cream at Rocky Point while you’re there.

1. Heart of East Van: Walk around Trout Lake or up Commercial Street (not Drive).
2. Miraj Hammam Spa: Really expensive, but definitely luxurious.
3. Burnaby public art: Check out Burnaby Mountain Park or the Burnaby Art Gallery.
Seán
1. Queen Elizabeth Park: One of the best scenic overlooks in the city. Check out the Bloedel Conservatory too.
2. Granville Island: A local market below Granville Bridge. Get some fresh pasta from Duso’s!
3. Sea to Sky Gondola: The Squamish Connector can take you there from downtown.
